Tennis showdown comes to Madison Square Garden

By Luis Vazquez

Only in Tennis it seems can you get two of the elite players in the world to play a high level exhibition and have it mean something. This Monday March the 3rd, 2014, we have the most famous arena in the world hosting just such a tennis happening. The event is question is the BNP Paribas Showdown at Madison Square Garden.

The brothers McEnroe will be battling together in doubles against the best doubles team in the world, Bob and Mike Bryan. In the singles match we have six-time Grand Slam Champion Novak Djokovic against Olympic Gold Medalist and 2013 Wimbledon champion, Englishman Andy Murray who renew acquaintances.

It should be a great night of action. In the doubles the Bryan Brothers are the top team going. The hardware confirms this. Fifteen Grand Slam titles confirm this without a doubt. Their opponents will be the McEnroe Brothers. John, of course, arguably one the best singles champions of all time. Alongside him is Patrick. Together they were among the best doubles teams in the 80’s.

The main event match pits the current #2 player in the world Novak Djokovic. The Serbian/Montenegran knows his opponent all too well. He has played #7 Andy Murray in three of the last four grand slam finals, losing twice. So there will be motivation for Novak to set the pace for the rest of 2014. For Englishman Murray it’s been a great run from contender to elite status since his Olympic win and he is loaded for bear once more. Both are 26 and in their primes as this rivalry has now surpassed Nadal-Federer as the match to see in Men’s Tennis.

BNP Paribas is the sponsor for this event as the name indicates. They are a French bank and Financial services company headquartered in Paris, France with a global headquarters in London, England.
